How long will solar pigeon proofing mesh last?

Our solar pigeon proofing mesh is made from high-quality galvanised steel and is built to last. All materials and workmanship come with a 5-year warranty for your peace of mind. However, with proper installation and normal conditions, we fully expect the mesh to last 10 years or more, providing long-term protection for your solar panels.

What problems do pigeons cause under solar panels?

Pigeons nesting under solar panels can cause several issues. They create constant noise from nesting and movement, which can be very disruptive. Their droppings can block gutters and drainage, leading to water overflow and potential damage. Pigeon faeces can also pose health risks and cause staining and corrosion to roofs, panels, and surrounding areas.

How much dose pigeon proofing installation cost?

The cost of solar pigeon proofing can vary depending on the size of the system and site access. Prices typically start from around £200, which includes a two-person team attending site, erecting temporary scaffolding where required, and installing professional pigeon proofing mesh. For larger installations, such as full roof systems with 18 to 20 solar panels, costs can increase to around £450.

One of the main factors affecting price is access, as restricted or difficult access can increase installation time. These prices are provided as a guide only. A full and accurate quotation can be given once all relevant information has been reviewed.

Will pigeon proofing affect my solar panel performance?

No, our pigeon proofing system is designed to protect your solar panels without affecting their performance. The mesh allows full airflow and water drainage, helping to keep panels clean and operating at maximum efficiency while preventing birds from gaining access underneath.

How is the pigeon mesh installed, and does it damage the panels?

Our steel mesh guards are securely attached to the solar panels using specialist reusable clips. This means there is no drilling, no damage to the panels, and no impact on manufacturer warranties. If future maintenance is required, the clips can be removed and reused safely.

If there is nesting material under the panels, we would recommend it be removed along with any chicks, carried out under General Licence 41. This prevents the nests and faeces from washing down into the gutters and blocking them

Is pigeon proofing a permanent solution?

Once installed correctly, pigeon proofing provides a long-term solution to prevent birds from nesting under solar panels. While no system can stop pigeons landing on roofs entirely, our mesh prevents access to the nesting area, stopping ongoing problems and repeat infestations.

How long will installation & cleaning take

Installation of a pigeon guard on a large 18-panel system typically takes around 2 hours. Under-panel cleaning for 18 panels also takes approximately 2 hours, depending on the condition of the area. Gutter cleaning can take up to an hour. On the day, our team will be able to give you a more accurate estimate after inspecting the site.

PIGEONS NESTING

Solar panels create a warm, sheltered, and predator-free environment, making them an ideal nesting location for pigeons. Once pigeons establish a nest, they tend to return repeatedly, often attracting more birds to the same roof.

Without proper pigeon proofing, nesting can continue year after year, leading to increasing levels of damage and contamination.

After installation

After having your solar panels professionally pigeon-proofed by our trained team, you can relax and enjoy peace of mind, knowing pigeons can no longer nest, cause damage, or create a mess.

Great service and would 100% recommend. Turned up on time, friendly and gave great advice and was very helpful. A very professional service was provided. My solar panels were cleaned of all pigeon droppings before he installed the mesh. He made sure I was happy with the job before leaving and I was happy with the price. He did everything he promised.

Solar Pigeon Proofing A Professional Guide

Solar pigeon proofing is not a cheap installation, so it is important to ensure the work is carried out correctly the first time. Poorly installed mesh systems can fail, allow pigeons and pests back under the panels, damage your roof or solar system, and in some cases even affect the manufacturer’s warranty. A professionally installed system should provide long-term protection while maintaining the appearance and performance of your solar panels.

One of the most important things to understand is that solar pigeon proofing should never involve drilling or screwing directly into the solar panels or frames. This can damage the system and may invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty. Professional installers should always use proper solar panel clips designed specifically for solar pigeon proofing. These clips should be UV-stabilised or stainless steel and designed to securely attach to the panel frame without causing any damage.

The type of mesh used is also extremely important. Proper solar pigeon proofing mesh should be either plastic-coated galvanised steel, hot-dipped galvanised steel, or stainless steel. In our experience, plastic-coated mesh is often the most durable and visually discreet option, although all professional-grade solar mesh systems can perform well when installed correctly. The gauge of the wire also matters. A 19-gauge mesh may be suitable for pigeon-only protection, however for squirrels and rodents a stronger 16-gauge mesh is generally considered the industry standard as it cannot easily be bent or damaged.

The aperture size of the mesh should also be carefully selected. For pigeon proofing, a 12.5 mm x 25 mm mesh is commonly used as it still allows excellent airflow beneath the solar panels. Where squirrels or smaller rodents are present, a smaller aperture may be required to prevent pests from squeezing through gaps.

The environment around the property should also be considered when choosing materials. Hot-dipped galvanised steel is a cost-effective and commonly used option with good durability. PVC-coated galvanised mesh provides additional rust protection along with a discreet matte black finish. Stainless steel offers the highest corrosion resistance and is particularly recommended for coastal or high-salt environments where rust protection is especially important.

Correct installation is just as important as the materials themselves. Solar clips should generally be installed at approximately 450 mm intervals around the solar array to prevent birds or rodents from forcing their way behind the mesh. The bottom edge of the mesh should also be bent outward at roughly a 30 to 45-degree angle to create what is commonly known as a “kick-out.” This allows the mesh to sit tightly against the roof tiles and helps prevent pigeons from gaining access underneath the system. On some roof tile profiles, the mesh may also require trimming carefully to follow the shape of the tiles and remove any potential gaps.

Another very important consideration is ensuring the mesh does not protrude above the edge of the solar panels. If the mesh sits too high, it can create shading on the panels which may lead to hot spots or “shade burn.” Over time this can reduce efficiency and potentially damage the solar cells. A properly installed system should sit neatly below the edge of the panels while maintaining a clean and discreet appearance.

Achieving a professional finish also requires care during installation. Working one side at a time helps avoid kinks or bends in the mesh and results in a tighter, cleaner fit. Corners where two lengths meet should be trimmed neatly and securely folded together to lock the sections in place. Additional ties may sometimes be used for extra reinforcement where required. Most importantly, there should never be gaps or openings where pigeons or pests can enter.

Solar pigeon proofing is far more than simply attaching mesh around solar panels. A proper installation requires the correct materials, proper fitting methods, knowledge of solar systems, and attention to airflow, shading, and pest-proof detailing. We always recommend using an experienced installer who specialises in solar pigeon proofing and provides a genuine workmanship warranty.

At Solar Pigeon Proofing Service, we provide professional solar pigeon proofing installations using high-quality materials and non-invasive fixing methods designed to protect both your roof and your solar panels. All of our installations come with a 5-year warranty on materials and workmanship for complete peace of mind.
